Gardiner community members and volunteers from various
Jefferson County emergency agencies placed the Gardiner Community Center
(GCC) Command Room into readiness Sunday, May 30th at the Gardiner
Community Center.
Working on their own time, members of the Jefferson County Dept. of
Emergency Management, JeffCom (911 Center), and
ARES /
RACES emergency Ham
radio operators teamed with other county volunteers and members of the
Gardiner community to install a Ham radio emergency communications
station including a computer at the community center.
Elizabeth Van Dyke of Gardiner planned the project and sought out
volunteers to bring the GCC Command Room to fruition. She worked closely
with Bob Hamlin and John Ebner of the Jefferson County Department of
Emergency Management; Gary Fell, the Jefferson County ARES Emergency
Coordinator, Discovery Bay Fire District Chief Ben Cooper and the
Gardiner Community Center Board of Directors.
The equipment and materials for the GCC Command Room were obtained
through grants and donations from Homeland Security, county agencies and
board members of the Gardiner Community Center. In addition to the Ham
radio station and antenna, the center received a gasoline powered
emergency generator, computer and printer, and furniture for the room.
In the event of a major earthquake, tsunami or wild fire the Gardiner
Community could find itself isolated from nearby towns and cities
because of downed bridges and/or closed highways. The GCC Command Room,
staffed by an ARES/RACES licensed Ham radio operator, members of the
Discovery Bay Fire District, and Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT) volunteers, will provide a means to transmit vital communications
to the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management and other
disaster and emergency points of contact.
The Gardiner Community Center will be a point to receive information in
a disaster. It does not store any emergency water and food supply.
Individuals participating in the installation included Elizabeth Van
Dyke, ARES/RACES Ham radio operator, Miller Peninsula Community
Emergency Response Team (CERT) coordinator; Bob Hamlin, Program Manager,
Jefferson County Dept. of Emergency Management; Ben Cooper, Fire Chief,
Discovery Bay Fire District; John Ebner, Gary Fell and Archie Tweedie,
Jefferson County ARES/RACES emergency Ham radio operators; Donna Hamlin,
Director of the Jefferson County 911 Center; and Gardiner community
members Larry Bennett, Morgan Van Dyke, Jim & Trish Warner, Dick Swenson
and Dick Bennett.
